Lisa Armstrong’s Top Tips on Wearing Nude Lipstick

While introducing the UK beauty media to AVON’s new Perfect Nudes collection, I caught up with celebrity make-up artist, Lisa Armstrong, for her expert advice on how to get the best out of your nude lip look.

Q. How do you select the right nude lipstick shade for your skin tone?

People tend to think it’s the boldest colours that are hardest to choose, but actually using nude lip colours is a lot harder. You want to accentuate your own lips – that’s the point of a lipstick! It’s not about making your lips blend into your skin tone. The rule is to contrast your nude with your skin tone – that works across the board from fair to dark.

If you have a pale, fair skin tone then go for a dusky pink, petal or rose colour to lift and brighten the complexion. If you’ve got a bluey, red undertone then you want to choose a nude that is more golden because the gold will brighten, freshen and lift up your skin.

If you have more of a yellow undertone, you can go down the pinky, blue tones because that will contrast and make your skin pop. You’re using a lipstick to make your lips stand out, so don’t make them look muted and deathly!

Q: How do you prep your lips to wear a nude lipstick?

I’d recommend using a soft brush with a gentle face scrub once a week to gently exfoliate the lips. Then moisturise and nourish the lips with an SPF – not a petroleum that just sits on the top of them. Good conditioned lips are the key to a chic lip look.

Q: Is there a secret to applying a nude lipstick?

Application depends on the look you’re going for and the size of your lips. If you’ve got fuller lips, you don’t necessarily need to use a lip liner. If you have smaller lips, a lip liner is great because you can define and accentuate the lip. Make sure the lip liner shade works with the lipstick shade though!

The AVON lipstick shape is pretty universal to most lip shapes, so it’s just a simple motion straight from the bullet for a gorgeous nude lip look. If you prefer something more understated, you could always gently pat it in for a softer look.

Q: What do you think of Avon’s Perfect Nudes Collection?

These lipsticks are so beautifully matte and velvety. They go on like silk and stay put. It’s a chic, nude look that you’re going for, so embrace it and make sure you get the right tone.

Q: And finally, what’s your favourite shade?

Nude Suede, definitely!
