What make-up to wear in summer

Summer is the perfect time to be out and about. Brunches, festivals and late-night partying are summer staples, but with the summer beat comes the relentless heat. So how do you ensure that your summer make-up stays on? Well, fear the humid weather no more. You don't need to be a make-up artist when you've got our pro tips to rely on.

Start with the right kind of moisturiser

The start of any good make-up routine is the right moisturiser. Try an oil-free tinted moisturiser to ensure your face isn't greasy throughout the day. Team it with a light concealer for a base that stays in place.

Another pro tip is to look for a moisturiser with built-in SPF, so you don’t have to remember your layer of sunscreen. It should be a priority no matter the weather, but it's doubly important in the summer when the sun is at its peak. We all want sun-kissed skin, so protecting yourself during the heat with SPF 30 is a great place to start Oh, and make sure you reapply every two hours when you're in direct sunlight.

Applying sunscreen can be tricky if you've already put all your make-up on. That’s where a spray-on sunscreen or a sunscreen powder comes in. They can be applied over the top of your make-up to give your protection throughout the day.

Then go for a light primer

Another make-up essential is primer. Primers don't take long to apply and should go on after your moisturiser but before your foundation. Gently rub a penny-sized amount into your T-zone, side of the nose and cheeks with your fingers and leave it to dry before applying your base.

Primers are especially key in summer because they really work to hold your make-up in place and prevent it from slipping off. What’s more, primers tend to be light, so it doesn't feel like another layer – fabulous. Why not try our Magix Shine & Oil Control Primer? You’ll love how easy it holds your make-up in place from morning to night.

Psst! We’ve got another pro tip to share. Avoiding silicone-based primers in the summer is best, as they can dry out your skin more than other primers and cause skin to produce more oil.

Go light on your foundation

When it comes to foundation, remember that less is more during the summer months. Opt for a foundation with a matte finish, as matte make-up is formulated without mineral oil or petrolatum. This means it will stay on better than creamy or glossy products without creasing –win, win.

If you're going for more of a natural make-up look during the summer months, dab your foundation on lightly. Spot treating those problem areas where you might need more coverage, such as your T-zone and blemishes, is another trick to keep you looking flawless.

Get a concealer that will stick

If you need a concealer during the summer months - don't worry, we've all been there - buy one that’s stickier than the rest. Look for concealers with a tacky consistency rather than a creamy one. These concealers are more likely to stay on during those humid summer months. Need to brush up on your concealer knowledge? Check out our advice here.

Don't go for shimmer

We all want gorgeous, dewy skin during the summer, right? Avoiding anything luminous or shimmery in the summer is the way to go – the hot weather and humidity will make you extra shiny and sweaty-looking. Trust us.

The eyes have it

When it comes to the eyes, avoid using any sort of eye cream on your eyelids, as this can break down your eyeshadow and eyeliner. Instead, go for something like an eye primer, which is lighter and creates a strong base for your eyeshadow to stick to.

You can also double up on your eye make-up to make the colour more intense and long-lasting. Apply a base layer of non-creasing cream eye shadow followed by a layer of powder eyeshadow over the top. This handy tip works for your eyeliner, too. Apply a gel-based eyeliner and reinforce the colour with a powder shadow on top. Fewer touch-ups mean more time by the pool.

Waterproof mascara is a must-have

It doesn't matter if you're planning to go swimming or not, a waterproof mascara is non-negotiable. Even on dry days, mascara is easily streaked and smeared from sweat and humidity. Waterproof mascara is sweat-proof to make it long-wearing, so running mascara will be one less thing on your mind.

Go sheer with your lip colour

The summer weather is bound to make your skin dewy and shiny, so avoid glossy lipsticks. Using sheer balm or lipstick in natural-looking colours will help you create that sheer lip look everyone’s loving this season.

Our other top tip for lips? Apply your lip liner first. The summer heat is bound to melt your lipstick, even the lighter ones, but a liner can help it stay in place and prevent the colour from bleeding out. To keep your lip liner from looking too harsh, try matching it to either your natural lip colour or the colour of your lipstick.

If you're having trouble matching your lip liner to your skin tone or lipstick colour, try an "invisible" lip liner. It has a clear, waxy film to stop the colour from bleeding – handy, right?

Finally, make sure it all stays put with a setting spray

Don't forget to set your summer look with a setting spray or powder. This will seal your make-up look and help prevent it from sweating off during those humid summer months – just be careful not to spray too much and mattify your look!

And there you have it! Knowing a few tricks of the trade seals your status as the summer make-up guru.
