Find Your Perfect Foundation

Finding the right style and shade of foundation can be tricky. From different formulas and finishes to picking the perfect match for your skin tone – there's a lot to take in. Luckily for you, we've put together a guide to help you learn how to choose foundation according to your skin's undertone, maturity and oil composition.

Whether you've got dry, oily or combination skin or are confused about shade matching, let's look at how to find the best foundation for your skin type.

Different Foundations

How to find your foundation shade according to your skin tone

Be careful when choosing your colour because not all shades will suit your skin – this applies even if they appear similar on the surface! Instead, it's important to pick according to your skin's undertones – that is, the natural colours underneath the surface of your skin. These can be quite different from what you think because very fair skin can have warm undertones, and dark skin can also have cool undertones or neutral colouring. As a rule, your shade will be one of the following:

  • Cool undertones: your veins will appear blue, and silver jewellery looks best against your skin
  • Warm undertones: your veins are greenish, and you prefer to wear gold jewellery
  • Neutral undertones: your veins don't stand out much (or they're a purple-blue), and you like both metals

Once you've identified your skin tone, it’s easy to find the perfect shade. We like to stick to pinks, beiges and rich browns for cool skin and golden or olive tones for warm skin. Stay away from warm or yellowish shades if you have neutral undertones.

How to match foundation to your skin type

Make-up should always complement your complexion. Choose based on your skin type for a flawless finish.

Oily skin

Oily skin can be frustrating, but there are plenty of products to help ditch the shiny face! Go for a medium to full coverage foundation, but most importantly, choose a matte make-up finish. Our Matte Cream-to-Powder Foundation creates a shine-free finish with long-lasting coverage, and the powder absorbs excess oil throughout the day. Choose from 22 different shades to match your undertone perfectly, too.

Dry skin

A liquid foundation is perfect for those with dry skin. Water or oil-based formulas will help smooth out dry patches, as well as even out your skin tone. Our Flawless Liquid Foundation gives you a full coverage feel without a hint of cakeyness and has a hydrating composition to leave your skin moisturised and radiant.

Combination skin

If you have combination skin, you’ve got the freedom to choose between a dewy or a matte make-up look. Find a foundation with buildable coverage to avoid a patchy finish – we recommend a matte foundation if you suffer from the dreaded T-zone oiliness.

Acne-prone skin

Firstly, if you suffer from acne, ensure you're giving your beauty brush a regular clean to avoid breakouts. Then, choose a foundation as light as possible, like a mineral or lightweight product with blemish-busting technology. Confident skin is unclogged skin!

Mature skin

As we get older, our skin changes. Unfortunately, we can suffer from sun damage, laugh lines or dull and dry skin, but foundation works wonders to help with these. Look for light make-up that won't settle into lines and will even out your skin tone, like our Anew Age-Transforming Foundation. If you prefer powder-to-liquid, choose a weightless formula with a light coverage.

Always use SPF make-up

Having SPF in your foundation is important – no matter your skin type. It'll help protect your face from harmful rays, leaving your complexion looking radiant for years to come.
