10 Simple Beauty Tips for Men

Skincare for men is just as popular as it is for women! Routines can be simple – sometimes with just two or three steps – or they can be more complex, especially once you count shaving and hairstyling!

In this article, we set out ten of the top beauty tips for men, ideal for helping you find the best grooming and hair products out there. Read on to find inspiration for a new hairstyle or skincare routine. Ready? Let’s go!

1. Washing your face

Regularly washing your face and using the right products is the most crucial step in any beauty routine, and your skin type will likely dictate the products you can use. If you have sensitive skin, washing with a harsher cleanser may not do your skin much good. Using a deep cleansing face wash in the morning is a great place to start, switching to something gentler like a cleansing balm in the evening to take off the day’s dirt.

For those on the go and with less free time to pamper themselves in the morning, a 2 in 1 shave gel and face wash will help save you time.

2. Moisturise

If you're going to wash your face, whether you follow up with a facial toner or not, applying a moisturiser is essential. Some might be wary that moisturising the skin might lead to blocked pores which could cause blemishes or spots. However, so long as you frequently wash and exfoliate your face, spots and blemishes shouldn’t be a problem. If your skin is oily, you might want to consider a lighter moisturiser or even a BB cream such as the Avon Nutra Effects Matte BB Cream. Those with a drier skin type might be interested in a thicker cream to help hydrate the skin. Why not try the After Shave Balm and Moisturiser?

3. Find a shaving routine that suits you

The essential for any close shave is a high-quality razor. Use hot water to wash your face and apply a shaving gel or foam. If you have sensitive skin, try a sensitive shave gel. Firmly press the razor against your skin and begin shaving in the same direction as your hair growth. Don't press too hard, or you may cut yourself. For a closer shave and smooth finish, shave against the grain.

Following up with a good aftershave will help prolong your shave and leave you smelling amazing – we recommend the scent-sational Black Suede.

4. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is an essential part of any skincare routine! It can help prevent blemishes and spots from forming while reducing the chance of ingrown hairs appearing after shaving. There are two main methods for exfoliating, either with a chemical peel or physical exfoliating grains like sugar scrubs. Exfoliating twice weekly buffs dead skin cells away, leaving you with smooth, blemish-free skin.

5. Find a hairstyle to suit you

Finding a hairstyle that suits your face shape and personal style can be tricky. If you love the long hair look, for example, but don't want to spend time brushing and washing your hair, this might not be the style for you.

We suggest starting short and styling it with products such as a hair pomade, then letting it grow to see how you like it at different lengths. If you’re trying to grow it out longer, help keep it strong and in good condition with a styling cream or hair serum.

6. Use SPF

Whatever the time of year, wearing SPF is a crucial element of any skincare routine. In sunnier months, make sure you wear a strong SPF such as factor 50. Aside from giving you a golden complexion, the sun's rays are damaging and can speed up the signs of ageing, as well as putting you at a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

7. Anti-wrinkle creams

Even if you like how your lines and wrinkles make you look, keeping your skin moisturised will give you a youthful glow and help you avoid dull-looking skin. To slow down the signs of ageing, applying moisturiser every day is essential, paying close attention to the eye area. Using an intensive eye cream before bed and at the start of every day is a great way to help stop the wrinkles!

8. Care for your facial hair

Eyebrow styling is for every gender, with many men opting to tweeze, pluck, wax and dye their eyebrows, and even more opting to have their nose and ear hairs trimmed. Known as "manscaping", there are several tips you can use for shaping and scaling back facial hair, like plucking the hairs that grow between your eyebrows and treating your beard and moustache with nourishing oil.

9. Conditioner

Not only is it important to shampoo your hair, but using conditioner is great for keeping it in top condition – especially if you're looking to grow your locks longer. Keep your hair looking smooth and nourished with a deep conditioner like the Absolute Nourishment Conditioner.

10. Hairstyling products

If your hair is longer, you may feel overwhelmed by the number of products out there. From sea salt sprays to mousses, there are loads of things to help you style your hair. If your hair is curly, try scrunching in some gel or curling cream after you wash it to help keep your curls in place for longer. And if you're on the go, invest in some dry hair shampoo to refresh your look throughout the day – another top tip from us to you!
